With my beloved Cardinals making a surprising run through the postseason over the past few weeks, I haven’t been making my weekly football pick posts. Sorry, but the Cards come first. But after tallying up the totals from the past few weeks, I now stand at an impressive 70-16 for the season. Pretty impressive if I do say so myself. With a full slate of action in store for this weekend, here are my picks.
Most of the SEC games are no-brainers this week. I’ll take Bama over Miss State, Auburn over Arkansas State and Ole Miss against Northwestern State. Arkansas travels to South Carolina, which should be a decent game. But I see the Razorbacks running away with this one late.
I’ve probably enjoyed watching the demise of Georgia this year as much as I’ve enjoyed the resurgence of my Vols. Honestly, they’ve not looked good all year. I expect that to continue this week as the ‘Dawgs travel to Kentucky. I still think Georgia wins, but I hope it’s a close one.
In order for my Vols to secure a date in the SEC Championship Game, I need two things to happen (and I’m not confident about either, really). First, I need Florida to stumble against one of their remaining SEC opponents. Sadly, I can’t see that happening, at least not this week. The Vanderbilt Commodores have to travel to the Swamp and although they’ve played everybody tough so far this year, there’s no way they knock off Florida. Lightning already struck once in Athens. The Gators won’t let it happen twice.
Second, I need my Vols to take care of business the rest of the way. They’ll get quite a test this weekend as the Bayou Bengals come to town. Playing at Neyland will help, but Erik Ainge’s injury and questionable status for Saturday makes me awfully uneasy about this one. We’d be hard pressed to beat LSU with Ainge; if he doesn’t play or if he’s not at 100%, this one could be ugly. As much as it pains me to admit it, I’ll have to pick LSU to avenge their loss to the Vols from last year. I hope I’m wrong.
Monday’s Oakland / Seattle game could be one of the worst games of the year. I’ll take Seattle in this irrelevant laugher. But the real game of the week is Sunday night’s showdown between Peyton Manning’s Colts and Tom Brady’s Patriots. Brady owns this matchup and his Pats are much more well rounded than this year’s incarnation of the Colts. Peyton’s run the table so far but Brady’s Foxboro magic will reign supreme. Pats win.
Actually, Florida travels to Nashville for the Vandy game. Not that its going to matter. I lucked up on tickets for the LSU game, so hopefully I can see Crompton lead us to victory. Defense is going to have to carry the load for us to win. Turnovers are needed. Turnovers that score touchdowns would be nice.
The wife and I had a celebration dinner last night with my graduate class. Several of the folks are from St Louis. As the evening progressed, I discovered that one of the couples have connections to Wonder Bread in St Louis … and wound up with tickets to the last 2 games of the World Series. They sat in the 7th row behind 1st base. I’m trying real hard not to envy my neighbors 🙂 What an experience that must have been.
yeah, bama winning would have been a no brainer, but who knew i was in for one of the most embarassing days of my life?…. ive never sat in bryant-denny in shock that long ever… not even against LSU last year. me and my roommate were actually asked to leave by security we sat there so long… i can’t believe that crap…
