Mitchell Report

Today is sure to be a historic day for the game of baseball, but not in a good way. Today at 2pm Eastern, the Mitchell Report will be released. Senator George Mitchell has been investigating the steroid scandal at the request of Commissioner Bud Selig since March 2006 and his report promises to name up to 80 current and former big leaguers, some of whom are of the MVP and All-Star caliber. Questions abound as to the even-handedness of the report; supposedly, much of the “evidence” Mitchell accumulated amounts to nothing more than a few canceled check stubs and the testimony of former New York Mets bay boy Kirk Radomski, who admitted to distributing anabolic steroids to dozens of Major Leaguers for 10 years starting in 1995. Maybe there’ll be more corroborating evidence that’ll come to light in Mitchell’s report, but the players who will be named today will have their reputations forever sullied. This is sure to be the biggest black eye yet for the sport I love so dearly.

Felt like the report delivered nothing that we didn’t know already. Although, I’m sure plenty of players use steroids the accusations in the report had pretty flimsy evidence, especially Brian Roberts. The whole thing seemed like a waste of time. All it did was ruin guys reputations with heresay.

Yeah, we’ve all known about Bonds, Tejada, Clemens and Gagne for years. The only surprise to me was Pettite. But the point is still a valid one. It’s really just the word of McNamee and Radomski and some check stubs.

David Justice looks like a total idiot. He talked to them and gave names, but said he was clean. And then he also ends up on the list. The Yankee hater in me was glad to see lots on them on the list. What did Clemens’ numbers look like before he went to Toronto? Wasn’t his career sliding downhill and then he resurged about the time he became a Blue Jay? That taints his accomplishments in my opinion.

Clemens left Boston after the 96 season and his numbers were in decline. He was starting to get banged up and approaching his mid-30s. The two seasons he had in Toronto (97 & 98) were just unreal. From the late 90’s on, I’ve heard his name in connection with steroid use. Honestly, I was a little surprised by some of the names that weren’t on the list: Brady Anderson, Jay Buhner, Albert (don’t call me Joey) Belle, Bagwell, etc. It’s also surprising how many of those guys were on my fantasy teams over the years!

i know this report doesn’t tell us anything we didn’t already know, but does it change the way we think about bonds’ accomplished during this era of baseball?we’ve always focused on the hitter with regard to ‘roid usage, but the mitchell report highlights that some of the game’s best pitchers were juicing up too.

  6. Unknown's avatar Jason says:

I’ve always said there are probably as many pitchers juicing as hitters. From what I can tell, some of the benefits of steroid use (muscle resiliency, primarily) would benefit pitchers more greatly than hitters. I know a lot of people are up in arms now, saying this damages Bonds’ and Clemens’ HOF candidacy. But the reality is there is no way to prove steroid use in an era where there was no testing. So I don’t see any way you can not vote either player in. Mitchell Report or no, they’re both first ballot Hall of Famers.

All hearsay. Expect lawsuits to follow. Besides, it wasn’t illegal. What about all the doping in professional football?

  8. Unknown's avatar Jason says:

Anon,If I were falsely accused of this, I’d probably press charges. Sounds like Clemens is posturing to do just that.
