American Idol: Top 11

I don’t know if anybody really cares about this, but it’s all I can think of to blog about right now that doesn’t require serious mental exertion. So here are my thoughts on tonight’s show:

As much as I loved last week’s Lennon / McCartney tribute, this week’s performances were just OK. Maybe back to back weeks was a bit indulgent. I hope next week they go with a genre theme rather than being artist-specific.

Best performance: David Archuleta’s “The Long & Winding Road”. Perfect song choice. Perfect performance. The kid redeemed himself after last week’s debacle. He has to be considered the favorite to win.

My favorite performance: David Cook’s “Daytripper”. I’m quickly becoming a David Cook homer. I just like the rock vibe. He’s definitely my favorite in this competition. I also like Michael Johns, but “A Day In The Life”? What were you thinking, dude?

The melodramatic performance of the night: Syesha’s “Yesterday”. I didn’t think it was a great vocal, but you can tell she has acting experience. Not quite the Fantasia moment she was probably hoping for, but enough to carry her through to next week.

The “I don’t get it” performance of the night: Once again, Brooke White gets the nod here. I simply don’t see what the appeal is. You could find hundreds of girls to get up there and sing weakly and dance awkwardly and grin and shrug. Yeah, she’s nice. Yeah, she’s sincere. But face it America: she can’t sing.

Bottom three prediction: The only one I’m sure about is Kristi Lee Cook, and I think she’s going home. As for the other two, I’m thinking Ramiele and Chekezie. But I’m really holding out hope that Brooke’s Napoleon-Dynamite-dancing will send her packing.

Sunny’s bottom three prediction: Kristi Lee, Ramiele, and Jason. I disagree about Jason; I think he carries the teeny-bopper vote. But his performance was pretty weak.

Your thoughts? Anybody else watching this besides Sunny and me?

I got home late in the game because of the 48 Road Tour. It is really interrupting my idol time πŸ˜‰ From what I saw it was a WEAK night. I agree about the fact that they just need to pick a theme and not get sooo specific. I agree 100% about Syesha. I did not think she was good at ALL! Maybe that was too harsh but I do hope she is in the bottom 3. I’ll have to let you two know the rest of my predictions after I catch up on TIVO tomorrow morning. Just want you and Sunny to know you two are not the only ones watching!

Archuleta’s performance, left my jaw wide open. I actual dislike that song maybe more than any Beatle song, and I loved his performance.David Cook, what can I say? I actually did pay 99 cents to download Eleanor Rigby, and it is wonderful. I may download Daytripper as well. I’m not a Syesha fan, nor a Brooke fan, but Kristen LOVES Brooke. I actually think Kristi Lee may not find her way into the bottom three. Definitely Chekezie, and Ramiele, and maybe Amanda? I thought Jason’s performance was decent, he has a pretty good voice.

I also agree with the fact that tonight’s songs were generally weak, and I don’t think they should have done the Beatles right after they did the Lennon McCartney show.

Thanks, Bri. Let us know your other predictions. I think Syesha could easily end up in the bottom 3 again. Lane, I’d love to see Amanda in the bottom 3, but I don’t think it’ll happen. Apparently she has quite a fan base. What kind of theme night should be next?

I’m definitely watching…and typically blog through the show. Last night I Twittered through the show…and had less participation … so next week it’s back to blogging through it!I think you are right on with all of your picks. I disagree with the following:David Cook must vary his style a bit if he’s going to continue. However, he’s a top 3 contender. If he can show some versatility I think he could win … but so far all of his songs sound alike and he will lose unless he changes. No doubt he has a recording contract in his back pocket.I also think you are missing the mark on Brooke. She is refreshing, honest, and her folksy presentation sets her apart in the crowd. I would buy her CD if it were out today. Last night, though, was horrid.Jason is nice and I like him, but he is a vocally weak performer. He is one of those performers who would be great live but terrible on audio-only. I do think the teenybopper vote will go David A’s way … keeping him in the top 3 and likely the winner.Michael Johns is top 3 as well. However, he’s had a couple of performances where he sang stinko songs (like last night) … and that will sink his boat. He has a rich voice and loads of talent … and a terrible knack for picking songs that fail to showcase his talent.Amanda gets my “I don’t get it” vote. If she would dump the heavy metal tongue displays and just sing I think she could be great. Carly is not as good as I had hoped…though she is beautiful and she can sing…she doesn’t have the range I think she needs to win. My Top 3 prediction: David Archuleta, David Cook, and Michael Johns. None of the girls are better than them.

I think next week should be the song selections from Steve Earle. Or, maybe P-Diddy.

  7. Unknown's avatar Jason says:

I’m thinking a Billy Ray Cyrus night. Talk about your ratings bonanza. All 10 contestants could just sing “Achy Breaky Heart”.

  8. Unknown's avatar Jason says:

John,You’re probably right about David Cook. He’s shown he can rock the house. Now he needs to go ballad, show a little diversity. Your top 3 prediction is mine as well. I’d love to see a finals with David, David, and Michael. With Brooke, it’s all about song choice. For a couple of weeks now, she’s chosen the perfect song for her voice & style. But this week she didn’t and she was exposed as a vocalist and as a performer. I’m sure she’ll stick around for a couple of weeks more, but I’m just not a fan.

Ashamedly, I actually owned that Billy Ray Cyrus album.

  10. Unknown's avatar -Lane says:

Wow. I predicted Amanda in the bottom three, but never thought she actually would be….wow.

  11. Unknown's avatar Kenny Simpson says:

When does Archuleta go? He is the best on the show, but so was Daughtry and others that were gone too sone. I think he does not make the top 3.

  12. Unknown's avatar Jacob says:

Man, I can’t believer you are still into American Idol. I thought you would have gotten tired of it by now.
