eMusic?

I was an eMusic member a year or two ago. If you’re not familiar with eMusic, it’s a great online subscription music store. Anyway, when I signed up, I got like 50 free downloads, plus the 20 or 30 you got with your monthly subscription. You can cancel anytime, so I basically paid for one month of service ($11.99), got my 80 downloads and quit.

Last week, I got an email inviting me back to eMusic with an offer that was too good to turn down. Pay for 30 downloads (still $11.99, or $12.99, I forget) and you get 70 downloads for free. So I basically have a month to find 105 songs I want to download and then I’ll cancel again. And this time next year I’ll probably sign up for a third tour of duty.

Anyway, I’m soliciting any and all music suggestions. What are you listening to right now that you would recommend? I don’t listen to very much CCM and I don’t listen to any rap or metal. Otherwise, I’m wide open. So far I’ve downloaded songs from the following: Arcade Fire, Conor Oberst, Doc and Merle Watson, the Hackensaw Boys, Michael McDermott, Neutral Milk Hotel, Old Crow, The Avett Brothers, Radiohead, Spoon, Storyhill, The Everybodyfields, The Gaslight Anthem, The National, The Real Tuesday Weld and Townes Van Zant. Any other suggestions?

If you want to go non-radio stuff that’s great, I’d suggest Damian Rice (sans Rootless Tree on account of the F bomb)9 Crimes is awesome, Cannonball, Volcano… all great. Also, there is a song from the movie, “Once” called Falling Slowly by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova that is fantastic. I’d also suggest Ray Lamontagne (Trouble and Crazy). Um, Regina Spektor (sp?) has a song called Sampson that is really good as well. I can give you great songs all day.Ashleigh Walker

Yeah, don’t cancel. Every Tuesday great new releases are added and additional stuff through the week. Best music source out there.Greg listed some good stuff, especially Barber and OTRI would add Brett Dennen, Flogging Molly, Great Big Sea, Neutral Milk Hotel, Twilight Sad, everything by Griffin House, Josh Joplin and a ton of others. Add me as a friend and you can see all that I have downloaded.

Greg,I’ve heard Over the Rhine is good, but I don’t have any of their stuff. I’ll have to check them out. I’ve also listened to a little of Vampire Weekend and I liked what I heard. I’m tempted to keep the subscription for a while. And I love noisetrade.com. It’s a great way to find out about indy artists. Ashleigh,I hear good things about the “Once” stuff. I know Hansard is on eMusic, so I’ll check it out too. Thanks for the recommendation. Seriously, I’m open to any and all tips on good music.

By the way, a new OCMS will be released on eMusic this month.

Yeah, I already have "Caroline" from the new OCMS. Thinking about seeing them in Nashville at the Ryman in October. I've been in a heavy bluegrass phase lately thanks to Old Crow & the Avett Bros. I didn't even know you could add friends on eMusic.

Ummmm…lately I’ve been listening to Carrie Underwood and Toddler Tunes…If you want any specific titles just let me know–I’ll give you the hook-up!! Ha ha….just kidding… This is pretty much the only thing I have to talk about when you post music posts… 🙂

  9. Unknown's avatar Jason says:

Stacy, don’t lie. We all know you’re a huge Neutral Milk Hotel fan!Sunny has the new Carrie Underwood; it’s not bad. I probably prefer it to Toddler Tunes.
