I had a long post all made up in my head about the term “preacher’s kids” and how much I absolutely hate it and how extremely judgmental that term is and how several ministers I know have left the ministry completely because of how “church people” have treated their kids or the judgmental comments that people have made and how even when you know people are just joking, it still bothers you and how if you were a minister with kids, you’d feel the exact same way.
But I decided not to post that. At least not in its entirety. Suffice it to say, I think it’s a hurtful thing to say to somebody about their kids. And there’s no room for that kind of judgmental behavior in the Lord’s church.
But instead of posting all of that, I decided to go a different direction. 🙂
Today, I’m posting a question: what are you reading right now? I have a trip this weekend and I just finished up my last book, so I’m looking for a new read. I read a LOT of politically-themed material in the months leading up to the election, so I’m ready for something a little lighter. I’m thinking fiction. Any good titles you’ve been reading lately? If so, lay ’em on me and I’ll see if our public library might have them.
Have you read anything by Rick Bragg? He won the Pulitzer a few years ago for All Over but the Shoutin’ He has since wrapped up on the third (and I think final) installment on that series and all three of them are gems. It’s not fiction, but it’s great, laugh out loud, cry yourself to sleep kind of reading.
I’m getting ready to start “In a Sunburned Country” by Bill Bryson. I love his books. His book “A Walk in the Woods” about the Appalachian Trail was terrific. I was reading “The Shack” recently and loved the imagery of the trinity, but got stuck and had to put it down for awhile. I still plan to go back and finish it. I tend to resist Oprah books, but am intrigued by “The Story of Edgar Sawtelle”. It’s on my future reading list. Hope to hear what you end up reading!
“The Flames Of Rome”- Paul L. Maier”The Last Disciple”- Hank Hanegraaff”Out Of The Silent Planet”- C.S. Lewis
Hey, great post. Growing up as a preacher’s kid I can remember people’s reactions when I told them that my dad is a preacher. It was almost the same as when I tell people today that I am a member of the Church of Christ. It hurts. But, since we aren’t talking about that let me suggest some books. In non-fiction, I just finished reading Lord of the Flies by William Golding again. I forgot how good that book is but it meant a lot more to me as an adult than it did when I read it as a kid. It is a short but great read. In non-fiction, let me suggest Matthew Paul Turner’s new book Churched. It discusses growing up as a child in a Christian home and is entertaining and sad at the same time. I wrote a review for it on my blog: http://thispilgrimland.blogspot.com/2008/10/book-review-churched-by-matthew-paul.htmlHave a safe trip.
“The Forgotten Man” by Amity Shlaes is a book about the history of the Great Depression.”The Book of Lies” by Brad Meltzer is a “fiction” book about a connection between Cain and Able and Superman. Sounds weird, great read.
unchristian by David Kinnaman and GABE LYONS is interesting. i’m working on it now, and it’s really showed me just how selfish and totally rude christians can be.
Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I went to the public library today and perused a few titles, but in the end I went with “The Kite Runner” and a memoir from a Darfur refugee.
