I’m in the process of compiling my list of my Top 10 Favorite Albums. Here’s my only criteria: no greatest hits compilations. Gotta be a real, full length album of original material. I have a feeling most of my faves right now have been released in the last few years. But before I unveil my own list, how about weighing in with some of yours? What are your favorite albums of all time?

Usually I’m one of the last to cast my vote or make my opinion known on such blogs…so why should I step out now?I just wanted to say that mrs. TH and I finally watched Walk the Line last night, and it was GREAT! I was surprised at the way Johnny was portrayed. Maybe it’s because I didn’t know much about him before, but the movie made him out to be a bit boyish at times. I always had him pegged as a rough and tuff son of a gun.Johnny Cash. I wonder which album(s) of his will end up in your top 10?
Here’s my top 5, which by the way, is a hard thing to choose:5. Dashboard Confessional; The Swiss Army Romance (Wonderful, all acoustic style music…very not Dashboard, but very much Dashboard)4. Billy Joel; Stormfront (Granted one of his later releases, I loved it)3. Garth Brooks: Ropin the Wind (Albeit I never listen to country anymore, this one I can always listen to..)2. Chris Tomlin; Arriving (This album always lifts me up, no matter what)1. I just can’t list a number one. I will show my age. I love all of the wow cd but back to my high school years I loved “England Dan & John Ford Coley – Greastest Hits. I listened all the way to and from college on my 8 track.

Laura,England Dan & John Ford Coley. Wow! Old school, baby! I used to have my Dad’s old 8 track player, but I chucked it once I figured out it was broken. You still have your old 8 tracks?
TH,Glad you liked Walk the Line. Cash was always a man-child. And he was a tough son of a gun. But the film focused on his self-indulgent days of addiction. You’ll just have to wait with bated breath to see which Cash album(s) crack the list. I guarantee at least one.
Lane,Do you remember how excited we were when your Dad drove us to Wal-Mart to pick up our copies of The Chase the day it came out? Man we were dorks…You mentioned at least one that’ll be on my list. I’ll reveal at a later date.Although your post does bring up a different discussion: what’s the best Greatest Hits album ever? Eagles Greatest Hits (sold more copies than any other)? Beatles (Red or Blue?)? Billy Joel I & II is some of the best music ever.
Hard to choose. I think I’d start my own list with the following, in no particular order:* The Joshua Tree – U2* Hotel California – The Eagles * Frampton Comes Alive! – Peter Frampton* Toys in the Attic – Aerosmith* Gretchen Goes To Nebraska – King’s X* The Number of the Beast – Iron Maiden* The World As Best As I Remember It, Vol 1 – Rich Mullins* The Jesus Record – Rich Mullins and a Ragamuffin Band* A Collision – David Crowder Band* Arriving – Chris Tomlin* I see things upside down – Derek Webbthat’s 10, but I could keep going. I don’t know how I’d narrow it down. I could list 1 or 2 more from all of the above artists as well.
Ah, getting The Chase, and going over to my room to put the “Cassette Tape” in my old stereo…the one where you had to rewind, and hit play while it was rewinding for it to work.It was a decent album.
Unfortunately, I do not have any 8 track. I wish I did just so my girls could see what they looked like. Oh well. My brother was the music guru in our family. He used to make fun of me because I would sing what I thought were the words and it would turn out that wasn’t what they were saying. He knew who sang what, and the words etc. I was not blessed with that gift. The irony to all of this is my oldest daughter is a music guru and she now laughs at me when I don’t have the words right. I wish was my brother was here because he would have alot in common with her. Number one making fun of me. Oh well, it isn’t in my cards to know these words to all of the songs. I just tell her that is the way I want to sing it that I do know what they are saying. Ha Ha We have a good laugh.

Laura,That’s great! I have a funny story about singing the wrong words to songs. A girl in my youth group in TN showed up to a Bible study at my house once and she was laughing so hard she was crying. We asked her what was so funny. She said her mom was driving her over to Bible study and the Will Smith song Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It came on the radio. Her mom started singing along and when it got to the chorus, she started singing, in full voice, “Eatin’ Chicken with it (nah nah nah nah nah nah nah)”. Classic.
Greg,I love your picks. I’m a big fan of U2, Crowder, Webb and Mullins. Have you listened to Webb’s Mockingbird? I have a feeling it’ll crack my Top 10.
Sunny,Thanks to you, I have an appreciation for the Chicks. Their last album is awesome. So is Home. And surprise, surprise…2 Christmas albums are among your faves. With cooler weather rolling in, it won’t be long before you get out the holiday tunes. But where’s Harry Connick’s Christmas album? I thought that’d be a shoe-in for you. And no Moulin Rogue or Grease? I hardly know ye.

I do like Harry Connick’s Christmas albums (his first one is probably the best). Don’t know why I did not put them on my list. I really thought about Moulin Rogue and Grease, but then I thought I would have to add Runaway Bride, Chicago, The Wizard of Oz and etc. I love musicals! I could never pick just one!!!

Jason, Yeah, I have all of Webb’s stuff. I love Mockingbird as well. I’m still slightly partial to “I see…” for some reason – maybe because it was actually the first disc of his I bought. But all three of his discs are great.I also have his live concert DVD (How To Kill and Be Killed) and it’s prettty good, too.
You are right, you can’t put a greatest hits compilation on a list like this. An album is what goes on during that one recording session, not a sampling of years of work. In my lists I always limit it to one per artist. I want what is their definitive work to be the representative.For me, I have to separate Christian music and non-Christian music to do a top ten list. Here is what we be on my secular list:1. Michael McDermott-self-titled. (Is there anything better than this one)2. Til Tuesday-Everything’s Different Now (Greatest Break-up album ever)3. Springsteen–Nebraska (Springsteen laid bare)4. Dylan–The Freewheelin’Bob Dylan (The standard bearer for contemporary song-writing)5. Matt Nathanson–Beneath These Fireworks 6. Kasey Chambers–The Captain (One of my 5 favorite voices of all time)7. John Mellencamp–Scarecrow (Every track screams justice)8. Guns N Roses–Appetite for Destruction (Greatest pure rock album)9. The Rolling Stones–Exile on Main Street (You can keep the Beatles, give me the Stones)10. U2–All That You Can’t Leave Behind (This nudges out “Joshua” and “Unforgettable Fire” for me. Here is where they bounced back from that electronica mess and churned out an album for the ages)I need to do a top 10 list. Haven’t done one in a while.

Scott, you hit on a couple that are definitely in my top 10. It’s covenient that you can compartmentalize your music into “sacred” and “secular” categories. Just kidding.
