4 Things I’m Loving & 1 Thing I’m Not

I haven’t made one of these posts in quite a while. Here are a few things I’m really loving and one thing that I’m less than stoked about.

1. Fantasy football – Both my fantasy squads are 8-2 on the season, earning me a spot in the playoffs. In my Mayfair league, I’m buoyed by the stellar play of Donovan McNabb and a top drawer receiving corps (Torry Holt, Antonio Gates, Isaac Bruce, Randy Moss & Antonio Bryant). In Blogger Bowl, my fates ride on the right shoulder of Peyton Manning. He’s my only player averaging double digits. As go Peyton and the Colts, so go the Hawgmollies.

2. Old Crow Medicine Show – My friend T.H. gave me a copy of their music a few weeks ago and I’ve been obsessed ever since. With a throwback sound and style, this Nashville-based group is making bluegrass music worth listening to. Their latest release, Big Iron World, is their best to date. Check ’em out. You’ll be glad you did.

3. Books – I love books. And with my birthday a few weeks ago, I really racked up. Here’s just a smattering of some of the books I’ve picked up recently. Now I just need time to read them! Dallas Willard’s The Great Omission, Philip Yancey’s Prayer, Brian McLaren’s The Secret Message of Jesus, God’s Politics by Jim Wallis, Communicating for a Change by Andy Stanley, Jesus & Politics by Andy Storkey, and N.T. Wright’s The Challenge of Jesus, The Last Word and Simply Christian. And what reading list would be complete without a few baseball books like 3 Nights in August by Buzz Bissinger or Rob Neyer’s Big Book of Baseball Blunders.

4. Christmas music – I owe this one to my wife. She’s been known to crack out the Christmas music in October, although this year she actually waited until November. I used to find Christmas music so completely annoying. But then we had kids. I’ve since repented of my Scrooge-esque ways and fully embraced Christmas music. I know, call me soft, I don’t care. There’s something about this music that makes me thankful for family and friends. That can’t be bad, right? Be looking for my Ultimate Christmas Music Mix CD post later on in the week.

And now for the one thing I’m not loving:

LOST is on hiatus…FOR 13 WEEKS! Last week’s episode will have to hold us over until February…which is after Thanksgiving, after Christmas, after New Year’s, after the Super Bowl! What am I going to do?

LOST is off the air for so long, I’m going to have a kid before the next episode (or at least my wife certainly hopes so!)

  2. Unknown's avatar Jason says:

Wow. That’ll put it in perspective. Hope everything’s still going well for you guys.

So, you still think that Lost is firing on all cylinders? It hasn’t missed a step?

I’m really going to miss Lost, but I really enjoyed the fall ender. I thought it ended perfectly! We will have to get the new Third Day Christmas CD to add to our ever growing collection! We also need to make a CD of the “kiddie” songs for Joshua and Abby Kate. We need to be singing those with them.

Scott – I can’t quite put my finger on it, but I’m with you…something just isn’t right this year. Don’t get me wrong, I still love the show, best show on TV by far.Jason – Thanks for the shout out…I can’t get enough of Creeper.

I’m close to done with it. There are so many things I think are wrong. Season Two was about the “tailies” and the hatch. So, basically, our reason for watching that season is gone–no hatch and only one unused “tailie” left.I feel strung along with pointless backstories toward an inevitable end due to spiralling ratings that will leave everyone unsatisfied. The shark has been jumped.

  7. Unknown's avatar Jason says:

Scott, the world’s biggest 24 apologist, is lecturing me about LOST jumping the shark?I knew this was inevitable. As the mythology continues to delve deeper, I fully expect some ADD viewers to jump ship. But the show continues to shine as a character-driven drama. And how can you say the reason for watching Season Two is gone? That’s ridiculous.

  8. Unknown's avatar Scott says:

Whoa, can’t take a little criticism of your show? Come on.I’m an ADD viewer? Some are going to jump ship? Check out the ratings. People are jumping in droves. And the critique I offer are just a few of the reasons. That was the best cliff-hanger they could come up with?Has there ever been a duller love triangle?Kate telling Jack that Sawyer will be killed is there big idea? How about telling Jack that Kate will be killed?Nikki and Paolo? What’s the point? And when are they going to give us any legitimate reason for the existence of the others and what they are trying to accomplish? And the flashbacks are just momentum killers.Face it, the emperor has no clothes. And don’t be surprised to see a major ratings drop come February.

  9. Unknown's avatar Jason says:

I know the ratings are down. And I figured that would happen. Like I said, as more is revealed, you have to expect some of the more casual fans to drift. Like you.I never said this was the best cliff-hanger ever. And this was never much of a love triangle…you could see Kate & Sawyer coming from a mile away. But this show requires patience and that’s half the fun. This entire season is going to be devoted to exploring the Others and what they’re all about. And we’ve actually been given quite a bit of info in these six episodes. And I disagree that the flashbacks are momentum killers. Sure the Kate ep didn’t really plow much new ground, but we’re given a portrait of her character coming full circle. In her flashback, she runs like she always does. But this is a contrast to her development on the island. We’re left with Jack screaming, “Run, Kate!”, yet she refuses. Thus, her backstory served to highlight how far she’s come in her time on the island. Same is true with Sawyer. Hey, if you don’t want to watch, don’t watch. But this is still the best show on TV.

  10. Unknown's avatar Scott says:

That’s the problem. I’ve invested too much–there has to be a payoff somewhere down the road. Right?

  11. Unknown's avatar Jason says:

    It’s coming, man. Trust me.
