Boogers and Jesus

Our kids have been fighting a cold bug for the past couple of days. So this morning, I noticed that Joshua had some pretty serious snottage going on. I told him to bring me a Kleenex so I could help him get cleaned up.

When we were finished, he looked at me and asked, “Daddy, why did Jesus give me all these boogers?

I know every good and perfect gift comes from above, but I’m not sure if boogers fit into that category.

I didn’t have much of an answer for him (I mean, seriously, what do you say?). But I know these are the soft toss questions. In a few years, there’ll be plenty of other questions he’ll ask and I doubt my answers will suffice then either. I know this because I’m not sure I believe some of these answers myself.

What Joshua doesn’t know is that this type of question has deep roots in Scripture. For thousands of years, believers have been questioning why God chooses to act in particular ways. The Psalms are littered with questions like Why God? and How long, O Lord? I know it’s a silly thing, but I’m thankful that Joshua is learning to ask his questions Christocentrically. I hope he’s asking the same type of questions in 10 years, 20 years, 50 years. To me, that seems to be the heart of faithfulness.

I’m reminded that we’re not called to always understand. We’re simply called to be faithful. Thanks for the reminder, son.

That’s cool. It is definitely something people ask when things happen. Interesting that we sometimes ask Why when we are going through hard times, but not as often when we are going through easy/joyful times. God gives us those too. It’s interesting to watch their faiths form. The other night Lawson woke up crying in the night and when I went in there it was obvious that something had scared him. I went to sing him a song and tell him to go back to sleep and he said, “Mommy, will you pray so that God will make me not be scared anymore.” If only I always had that as my first reaction too!

Jesus gave us boogers as proof that there is a snot war waging in our noses. The booger is simply bad guy carnage.
