Football Friday Returns

With my beloved Cardinals making a surprising run through the postseason over the past few weeks, I haven’t been making my weekly football pick posts. Sorry, but the Cards come first. But after tallying up the totals from the past few weeks, I now stand at an impressive 70-16 for the season. Pretty impressive if I do say so myself. With a full slate of action in store for this weekend, here are my picks.

Most of the SEC games are no-brainers this week. I’ll take Bama over Miss State, Auburn over Arkansas State and Ole Miss against Northwestern State. Arkansas travels to South Carolina, which should be a decent game. But I see the Razorbacks running away with this one late.

I’ve probably enjoyed watching the demise of Georgia this year as much as I’ve enjoyed the resurgence of my Vols. Honestly, they’ve not looked good all year. I expect that to continue this week as the ‘Dawgs travel to Kentucky. I still think Georgia wins, but I hope it’s a close one.

In order for my Vols to secure a date in the SEC Championship Game, I need two things to happen (and I’m not confident about either, really). First, I need Florida to stumble against one of their remaining SEC opponents. Sadly, I can’t see that happening, at least not this week. The Vanderbilt Commodores have to travel to the Swamp and although they’ve played everybody tough so far this year, there’s no way they knock off Florida. Lightning already struck once in Athens. The Gators won’t let it happen twice.

Second, I need my Vols to take care of business the rest of the way. They’ll get quite a test this weekend as the Bayou Bengals come to town. Playing at Neyland will help, but Erik Ainge’s injury and questionable status for Saturday makes me awfully uneasy about this one. We’d be hard pressed to beat LSU with Ainge; if he doesn’t play or if he’s not at 100%, this one could be ugly. As much as it pains me to admit it, I’ll have to pick LSU to avenge their loss to the Vols from last year. I hope I’m wrong.

Monday’s Oakland / Seattle game could be one of the worst games of the year. I’ll take Seattle in this irrelevant laugher. But the real game of the week is Sunday night’s showdown between Peyton Manning’s Colts and Tom Brady’s Patriots. Brady owns this matchup and his Pats are much more well rounded than this year’s incarnation of the Colts. Peyton’s run the table so far but Brady’s Foxboro magic will reign supreme. Pats win.

Thirty

Thanks for all the well-wishing comments on the day’s earlier entry. Sunny “snuck” onto my blog this morning to post that birthday wish, complete with a pic of yours truly on that glorious day some thirty years ago. Thirty feels about right for me. What’s strange is that in 10 years, I’ll be FORTY. That just ain’t right.

But I have to admit: I have the best wife in the world. She surprised me Saturday with a 30th birthday party, which was great. Today, she surprised me again by giving me THIRTY birthday gifts. Needless to say, I’m overwhelmed by her love. You’re awesome, Sunny.

So, in honor of my thirty years of life, I thought I’d blog today about some of the future goals I’ve set for myself. If I play my cards right, I figure I have another thirty or forty years left (Lord willing). In honor of the big day, here are thirty things I hope to accomplish in whatever time I have left:

Thirty Goals (in no particular order)
1. Visit all 30 major league baseball stadiums (18 down, 12 to go)
2. Begin a full-time pulpit ministry
3. Write a book. (I used to write a lot more. I wish I had the time to really write.)
4. Take my kids to Disney World
5. Take Sunny to Europe…
6. …AFTER I finish with grad school (5 more years, baby!)
7. Own my home (26 more years, baby!)
8. Take an Alaskan cruise
9. Learn to cook
10. Hike the Grand Canyon
11. See U2 in concert
12. Read everything by C.S. Lewis (I still haven’t forgotten, Lucy)
13. See the Cardinals win ANOTHER World Series (I know, I’m being greedy. I don’t care.)
14. Learn Spanish
15. Take a mission trip to Africa
16. Go skydiving (I think I know a family member that can help me with this one!)
17. Meet Ozzie Smith, get his autograph and tell him he’s the reason I’m a Cardinal fan
18. Hear Fred Craddock preach
19. Teach at least one class at the university level
20. Learn to play the guitar
21. Become a better disciple of Jesus
22. Visit the holy lands
23. Coach my kids’ Little League teams (or soccer clubs, Mike)
24. Learn to juggle
25. Memorize the Sermon on the Mount
26. Take batting practice at a big league stadium
27. Baptize my kids
28. Spoil my grandkids
29. Love people more
30. Get old and fat and live out my days in a rocking chair on my front porch next to Sunny

Well, there you have it. Thirty years in, I wouldn’t trade a thing about my life. Here’s hoping the next thirty years are as exciting and fulfilling as the first thirty.

Prematurity Awareness Month

This is a cause Sunny and I are very passionate about.

Take Action to Save Babies

Help save babies from premature birth by taking action at The March of Dimes.

More than half a million babies are born too early each year. Premature birth is the number one killer of newborns and babies who survive could be disabled for life. The March of Dimes is leading a national effort to save babies from premature birth by funding research to find the causes and by supporting local programs for families with a baby in intensive care.

That’s why the March of Dimes has designated November as Prematurity Awareness Month. During November and any time during the year, you can help the March of Dimes fight premature birth.

TAKE ACTION—JOIN THE MARCH OF DIMES—decades ago, millions of dimes from concerned Americans helped us defeat polio. Today, we need all the change you can spare to fight an even bigger challenge—premature birth. Join the MARCH OF DIMES and help save babies by donating your spare change at a Coinstar center near you. For locations or more information visit The March of Dimes Website.

Many of you know that our children spent some time in the NICU after their births. Those days and weeks were some of the toughest of our life. Thankfully the March of Dimes is there to help the babies that are born too early!

A New Season

At an early age, God placed a dream in my heart.

As a young boy growing up in the College Street Church of Christ in Lebanon, Tennessee, I listened as Brother Larry Locke spoke to us each week from God’s Word. I studied him as he stood before the congregation every Sunday morning, delivering his messages, always concluding with an invitation to come to Jesus. I can’t remember the exact moment, but somewhere back there I decided that telling people about Jesus was just about the best thing a person could do with his life. People would ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up and I would answer them quickly: a preacher.

I remember other kids — in Sunday school, of all places — making fun of me when I told them this. Melissa Vaughn scoffed and said, “Preachers are boring.” But I didn’t care. I didn’t think preachers were boring at all. Preachers got to tell all kinds of exciting stories, like the one about Moses and the plagues or the one where David killed Goliath. And preachers got to tell funny jokes and everybody had to listen to them and when they got to the funny part, everybody in the whole church would laugh out loud. As far as I was concerned, Melissa Vaughn was crazy.

About the time I was 10, I decided I really wanted to be a baseball player. This was a much cooler job and I figured I stood to make a lot more money as a ball player. But I felt guilty just abandoning the dream of being a preacher. So I came up with a solution: I’d play for the Cardinals Monday thru Saturday and then I’d preach on Sunday mornings. I could even play ball on Sunday afternoons and still be ready to preach again on Sunday night. Eventually I realized that I couldn’t hit a curve ball, so I gave up on being a baseball player. But I never could shake this whole preacher thing. Despite times when I’ve tried to deny or ignore this calling on my life, I’ve always returned to this notion of ministry, specifically preaching. I always come back to the fact that God created me to tell other people about Jesus.

For the past 10 years, youth ministry has been the fulfillment of this dream. I’ve been blessed to serve in a variety of contexts in youth ministry — as in intern, a teacher, a coach, a campus minister and a youth minister. God has given me some tremendous opportunities to minister to students over the years. My heart swells as I think of the teens in my youth group in Kingsport, the students in my classes at Madison Academy, and now the members of the Mayfair Youth Group. These young people have encouraged and challenged me; they’ve taught me of discipleship and passion and joy and abundant faith. I reflect over these 10 years and names and faces flood my mind and my heart. I’ve truly been blessed.

But in the past few months, I’ve heard the gentle voice of my God, whispering, calling me to a new season of ministry. I’ve heard it said that God doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called. Such would be the case here. I continue to feel Him guiding me toward a ministry of proclamation and pastoral care. But God is choosing to qualify this calling in a rather unexpected way…

Our shepherds announced on Sunday that I will be transitioning out of youth ministry to assume the position of an associate minister at our congregation. I will work very closely with our pulpit minister, Gary Bradley, who will serve as a mentor for me. I’ll have a unique opportunity to observe him in action, learning from his vast experience (nearly 50 years) in ministry. Obviously, the wisdom I’ll glean from Gary will be invaluable to me as I move into a pulpit somewhere someday. I’m excited about this opportunity to develop in some new ways as a minister.

I’m thankful to serve alongside men of vision like our shepherds. I’m thankful for Gary and his willingness to assume this role in my life. I’m also thankful for a congregation like Mayfair that is willing to make an investment in a young minister like me. And ultimately, I’m thankful for the ways in which God continues to bless me. I’m the undeserving recipient of so much. May You find praise, Lord, in this new season You’ve led me to. God bless.

World Champs

I’ve wanted to say this my whole adult life. The St. Louis Cardinals are World Champions. What a way to christen New Busch Stadium. Drink deeply, Cardinal Nation. 1982 was a long time ago. Here’s hoping we don’t have to wait 24 years for another title. In the words of the immortal Jack Buck, “Go crazy, folks…go crazy.

Play Ball

We’ll try and get Game 4 in tonight before the rain returns. In honor of his goofy spot in the 3rd inning with Scooter, Fox’s ridiculous talking baseball, here’s a pic of my boy Soup, the NLCS MVP. BTW, the Cards announced Jeff Weaver will start Game 5. Not sure I like the decision, since Reyes was dealing in Game 1. Go Cards!

Rain, Rain, Go Away…

Kinda bummed that tonight’s ball game was rained out. Actually, I’m really bummed. I actually don’t have tons and tons of grad school work to do. Would’ve been a perfect night to watch some baseball. But no dice. Now I’m stuck watching ESPN highlights of hockey and pre-season NBA.

Which leads me to ask: which sport is more irrelevant these days? Since Jordan left the game, the NBA hasn’t had the same appeal for me. But The Association is actually doing quite well these days in urban areas. As for hockey…I know this is the south, but I honestly don’t know anybody who cares. Quick: name for the me the pivotal moment in last season’s hockey playoff. Go ahead. I’ll wait. I’ll bet most of you didn’t even know they played hockey last season.

So if you could only pick one of the two sports to lose, which one would it be and why?

Way to go, Carp. Up 2 games to 1 with Soup on the mound for Game 4. Nice.
